In 2010 a consensus was reached among mental health professionals at the American Counseling Association Conference as to what the official definition of “counseling” should be. They reached an agreement of the following 21 word statement. This statement encompasses what counseling is and should be both for the professional counselor and the client.
“Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals.”
Reaching this definition gives us a better understanding as to what the role of the counselor is and the overall purpose for counseling in our daily lives. The ability to create a professional relationship with someone to reach your goals as an individual, couple, or family, is a unique opportunity.
The professionals at IPC believe in this definition fully and put it’s principles to practice daily with our clients!
